| Title |
Enlarging the genetic variability of protein legumes by biotechnology |
| Status |
ongoing |
| Description |
- Improvement of protein quality, digestibility and productivity of minor protein legumes for LIFDCs;
- Safer consumption of grain legumes where toxins are a health problem (grass pea);
- Introduction of agronomic traits by selection in vitro following mutagenesis, somaclonal variation or somatic hybridisation;
- Acceleration of generation cycles for a faster breeding;
- Enhancement of disease and stress resistance.

| Describe activities and strategies
used |
- Regeneration of whole fertile plants from protoplasts, cells, tissues and explants.
- Sexual hybridization, recovery of hybrids obtained and characterization of them (isoenzymes, flow cytometry, fluorescence and genomic in situ hybridization, molecular markers).
- Protoplast fusion and somatic hybridization for the side-stepping of barriers to sexual crossing between species and genera.
- Understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying seed quality.
- Study of the relationship between cell wall composition, seed growth and digestibility for human and livestock.
