Project
Enlarging the genetic variability of protein legumes by biotechnology
ongoing
  • Improvement of protein quality, digestibility and productivity of minor protein legumes for LIFDCs;

  • Safer consumption of grain legumes where toxins are a health problem (grass pea);

  • Introduction of agronomic traits by selection in vitro following mutagenesis, somaclonal variation or somatic hybridisation;

  • Acceleration of generation cycles for a faster breeding;

  • Enhancement of disease and stress resistance.

Plant Genetic Resources
Strengthening Partnerships and Capacities
  • Regeneration of whole fertile plants from protoplasts, cells, tissues and explants.

  • Sexual hybridization, recovery of hybrids obtained and characterization of them (isoenzymes, flow cytometry, fluorescence and genomic in situ hybridization, molecular markers).

  • Protoplast fusion and somatic hybridization for the side-stepping of barriers to sexual crossing between species and genera.

  • Understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying seed quality.

  • Study of the relationship between cell wall composition, seed growth and digestibility for human and livestock.
